The Birth of LRTD Inc.
It was the year of 2016 in August 15, when the Leadership for Reformation and Transformational Development Inc. was officially registered in SEC by its founding organizations in Central and North Luzon. These Microfinance NGOs came together because of the need to co–exist, co- mentor and create relationships vital to each other’s existence. It was also the year that the landscape of the Microfinance industry is forced to take a new road for development.
In the same year the government has required MFIs in the Philippines to level up its services to the clients of the industry. Best practices among practitioners have to be shared for the common survival of the sector. Stiff competition from other sectors such as banks and cooperatives are also using micro-financing as a platform of servicing and assisting disadvantaged groups is gaining grounds due to better and more responsive approaches to the program.
The Industry of Microfinance has a lot of nitpicking to do and has a share of its own mistakes and lapses in the overall implementation of the program.
Hence the government has created Microfinance NGO Regulatory Council (MNRC) to ensure that organizations of the industry are properly regulated and following acceptable standards in its implementation. MFIs are also working to be accredited with regard to Social Performance Management.
Due to fast development and increasing demand of the Industry, organizations which include Talete King Panyu-lung Microfinance NGO, Light Microfinance Incorporated, Rangtay sa Pagrang-Ay Microfinance Incorporated and Philippine Microfinance For Alternative Development and Empowerment Inc . have binded together and decided to mentor and share their expertise and resources. This is to ensure that the group can cope with the fast-paced demand of the sector while maintaining and achieving relevance in the industry.
Although the Concept of the Informal Network was established by the organizations, the very intention of the group was initially based on the need for accreditation and maintain institutional partnerships with one another. Until a time that the group has decided to explore further as to what it can do to serve one another. A Friday Team was informally created to continue updating each other. Some common organizational training requirements of this group were also severely conducted. Until a Technical Working Group to study and recommend to heads of the 4 organizations how to level up and formalize partnerships. The group was also tasked to assess if such partnership will create interdependence and beneficial to all in the long run.
The informal meetings and partnerships continued until 2018 till the middle of 2019. The Founding Organizations finally decided in 2020 to organize the Office of the Leadership for Reformation and Transformational Development Inc. with regular employees headed by an Executive Director to flesh out and implement programs that are responsive to the needs of the member organizations.
The Network is now officially having its Office at the TPKI Business Center in San Fernando City and currently carrying out its mandate based on its Vision and Mission.

At that time, its main objective was the provision of financial assistance in terms of loans to women micro entrepreneurs who were unable to avail of the services of formal financing institutions. As RPMI continued to evolve, so did its programs and services. Today RPMI maintains 27 branches spread out in the provinces of Pangasinan, Tarlac, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and the Cordilleras. As in the case of any MFI, the institution experienced its share of the struggles and challenges brought about by a highly competitive industry and the ever changing microfinance landscape. Thus, RPMI opted to maintain a rather conservative expansion program up to the present. RPMI offers various types of loan products and a capital build-up scheme that cater to the diverse needs of the entrepreneurial poor. Other non-financial services include community and business development programs, wholistic transformation activities all geared towards uplifting the lives of its target clientele. RPMI aims to fully integrate the Client Protection Principles into its operational areas as it moves forward to realizing its social goals of reaching target clients, meeting target clients’ needs and changing target clients’ lives.
RPMI’s dream of reaching greater heights, going beyond microfinance and putting clients first is slowly becoming a REALITY.
